In this scene is performed the noose-bearers. Ghent (Gent), Belgium continued to resist the emperor Charles V. In February 1540, Charles V invaded Ghent and punished the city. Rebels were condemned to be hanged and had to walk through the city on May 3 barefooted and with only a shirt and a noose around their neck. They had to kneel and beg the emperor for mercy in the Prinsenhof.
