Pageant of the Golden Tree 2007 (Praalstoet van de Gouden Boom) Bruges (Brugge), Belgium : This gallery is about the Pageant of the Golden Tree (Praalstoet van de Gouden Boom) which takes place only every five years in Bruges (Brugge), Belgium. Central theme is the “Tournament of the Golden Tree”, organized on the occasion of the marriage of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders (Karel de Stoute, Bourgondische Hertog en Graaf van Vlaanderen) to the English princess Margareth of York July 3, 1468 in Damme, Belgium. The age-old legend of the Golden Tree is also acted out as well as a more modern historical representation of the history of Flanders with special attention to the role of the municipal magistracy, the guilds and the corporations in their battle against the ruling sovereigns. But in the first place, the pageant, which lasts about 2 hours, is a very colourful and enchanting event with some 2,000 actors, six giants and twelve floats. The organizers are to be congratulated for flawlessly organizing such an exquisite, colorful and very impressive spectacle. The Pageant drew about 100,000 spectators (thanks to the nice weather) and is becoming one of the biggest Pageants in Europe. Pageant/Historic Parade of the Floralies 2008 (Historische Praalstoet Floraliën) Ghent (Gent), Belgium : For the first time ever, the city of Ghent (Gent), Belgium, organized a pageant (historic parade), celebrating in a grand manner the 200th anniversary of the five-yearly Floralies. The Floralies is a huge plant and flowers exhibition in which ornamental growers from all over the world exhibit their most ornate flowers and plants in a vast indoor garden set up in Flanders Expo in Ghent. The next Floralies start on April 16, 2010. In this historic parade, the history of Ghent was shown in 35 scenes. 250 horse riders, 1,200 figures and 21 floats provided the spectacle that was attended by 100,000 - 125,000 spectators (among them King Albert II and Queen Paola of Belgium). Though it was a very well-done spectacle, it could not compete with the magnitude and grandeur of the Pageant of the Golden Tree in Bruges.
